A Fun-Filled Family Getaway to Remember

If you're planning your next family getaway, you’ve probably considered the usual popular New Zealand family holiday destinations! But have you considered a stay here at Montrose Estate, just an hour outside of Christchurch? Not only are we super easy to get to, but there are so many exciting activities on offer within the property and nearby to make your trip memorable and show the whole family a good time. From skiing and snowboarding to hiking and sightseeing, there's something for every family member in and around our spectacular estate.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Nearby Opuke (Mount Hutt) is a great place for families to hit the slopes together. There are runs for all levels of experience, from those who have never set foot on snow before to those who those with annual passes. Ski and snowboarding lessons are available, and you can even take them as a family! The First Timers Package includes a full-day group lesson, ski/snowboard equipment rental and a beginner lift pass... If you have children who aren’t too sure about skiing or snowboarding, Skiwiland could be a better fit! The licensed Early Learning Centre caters to children under the age of five and includes snow-based experiences. If your family isn’t too keen on skiing, a visit to the ski field is still worth making!  You can hire a toboggan or take in the scenery from the Summit Six Chairlift.

Hikes and walks

If you're looking for another way to experience the beauty of our region, there are many hiking trails in the area. Some of the most popular hikes include the Summit Walk, the Ridge Walk and the Waterfall Track. These hikes vary in difficulty, so make sure to choose one that is appropriate for your family's skill and fitness level. The 800m Alder Track is a great starting point—it begins at the base of Opuke (Mt Hutt) in Awa Rata Reserve and weaves through flats before climbing to a larch plantation. It’s only about a 30-minute walk and the peaceful stroll through the bush is rejuvenating!

Horse riding

Just a few kilometres away from Montrose at Lake Coleridge is High Country Horse Adventures, offering one of the best ways to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the remote local high country. This activity is ideal if you have older children as there is a minimum age of 10 years old—but horses are matched to the rider, regardless of their level of experience. Ride together as a family for just a couple of hours or opt for a full-day or multi-day trek; the options are all yours! You can explore the lakeside, amble through the river, climb up the hills and weave among the native forest. It’s an activity you’ll be talking about for many years to come!

Jet boating

If you’re bringing children on your family holiday, jet boating is one activity that’s sure to get them excited to touch down at Montrose! There are two local jet boat operators in the area who can collect you VIP-style from the banks of the Rakaia River right here at Montrose Estate. Shoot over rapids, zip around bends and stop to experience the tranquillity and jaw-dropping beauty of the Rakaia Gorge. This is an absolute must-do!

Hot Pools

If there’s one thing kids love, it’s swimming! And after a tiring day of skiing, hiking, or sightseeing, there's nothing better than a long soak in a steaming hot pool... In nearby Methven, the Ōpuke Thermal Pools and Spa offer a wonderful family experience. The discovery pools will surprise and delight children, with a crazy river, a jump pool and star lit caves... And you don’t have to worry about disrupting others—the kids can enjoy themselves to their hearts’ content as the adults-only pools offer plenty of peace and privacy.

Farm tours

Whether your family are city slickers or you simply want an insight into what farming is like in this part of the world, a farm tour is an enlightening experience. Benlea Farm and Middle Rock Farm are both around a 20-minute scenic drive from our luxury accommodation. You’ll see farm activities like sheep dog mustering, sheep handling and lamb feeding (when in season) and may just depart with a budding farmer or two on your hands!
